I did:
$ sudo chmod +x
/usr/share/doc/mythtv-backend/contrib/maintenance/optimize_mythdb.pl
$ /usr/share/doc/mythtv-backend/contrib/maintenance/optimize_mythdb.pl
And then the backup seems to have worked.
