I know nothing about Macs specifically. However under linux ... My first question would be 'what's in the error log'? Often in /var/lib/mysql/<host>.err Next, have you run the mysql_install_db script to create default databases and permissions? Next, have you checked that use mysql has permission to access the data directory and socket directory?
