I had a look at the demo packages - I downloaded the RedHat 9 and Slackware 9 packages.
I can only speak for myself, but I think you'll get a lot more people try it out if it doesn't come in a million tiny pieces. that install all over the system.
I'm running a Gentoo system, and one of the reasons I chose Gentoo is because it keeps everything in the filesystem nicely ordered.
If I use 'rpm' ( or unpack the Slackware tgz files ) onto my system, I'm going to be left with a complete mess, and possibly one that is now broken due to incompatible libraries.
Seriously, binary packages should install themselves away in a nice little corner where they don't frig with anything else, and can be easily uninstalled if necessary.
