A shell prompt is the Unix/Linux equivalent of the DOS prompt. Since you have the choice of several different operating systems shells to work in (Bourne shell - sh, Korn shell - ksh, C shell - csh, Bourne Again shell - bash (my favorite), etc) the command line prompts are generically referred to as shell prompts.
