Look for 'UNION' and 'MERGE' in the manual.
If you're pre 4.0 then:
SET @cnt:=SELECT COUNT(*) FROM orders WHERE member_id='2';
SELECT @cnt + COUNT(*) AS totcnt FROM old_orders WHERE member_id='2';
