I've recently had a couple different problems with 3.23.32 hanging under RedHat Linux when trying to shutdown or restart the database. I also know at least one other guy who was having the same problem on a different distro of Linux. In my case sometimes I've had to kill -9 mysql processes and delete lock files to get it to start even when trying to make it start after just booting up. Possibly a bug in the startup/shutdown scripts? Not sure if it's related.
