Richard,
In my instructions, the chowns are as follows: shell> chown -R root /usr/local/mysql/. shell> chown -R mysql /usr/local/mysql/data shell> chgrp -R mysql /usr/local/mysql/. Note no slash after data. However, you have world read and write on the data folder anyway The mysql folder is a link into /root/mysql-max-4.1.14-pc-linux-gnu-i686 My guess is that the tomcat user can't create a file in /root/ mysql-max-4.1.14-pc-linux-gnu-i686/data What do you get if you do: ls -l /root/mysql-max-4.1.14-pc-linux-gnu-i686 Can tomcat write into this?
