I wrote to the list explaining about the Great Circle formula for doing the desired calculations. I also stated that places.zip was the file to be used for these calculations--I misspoke. The correct file is "http://www.census.gov/tiger/tms/gazetteer/zcta5.zip";. Sorry for the error!
