    I did the binary installation. Yes, I restarted and checked again, it shows same.

  Have you tried shutting down the server, then restarting it to check
  all is working okay?

  On Red Hat you can do:

      /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql restart

  to get the server to be shutdown then started again.
