I have run a very late MySQL 3.23.x version FreeBSD 5.0 without any
problems.

All MySQL releases are also test compiled and tested on FreeBSD 4.2
(Including the 3.23.35 and 3.23.36).

If you can recompile MySQL with --with-debug and get us a stack trace,
we could help you to figure out what's wrong.

Regards,
Monty
