Yes, the bridge works as advertised. I use it regularlly, though not
with this account.

Is this safe depends on your definition of safe. I don't have a
compelling reason to put a mail system in a VM or container. I also
don't think that anyone has remote root access to this machine. If they
did, I suspect the VM or container could also be compromised. But I am
not a secure computing expert.

If you want to go VM or container route, you might be interested in the
hydroxide project on GitHub. This also provides a bridge. However, the
bridge is designed for servers not desktops.
