Thanks José! Your email made me think of this problem in a new way. I've now modified my .muttrc with a "set editor" line like this: set editor="vim -c 'set syntax=mail ft=mail enc=utf-8' -c 'setlocal spell spelllang=en_us'"
With that, my mutt is highlighting spelling errors as I type them. This has allowed me to remove my macro for spell checking before sending.
