Oh I see.  That's a little confusing. :-)

For now, I helped myself by adding "<exit>" to the macro when in the attach 
menu.

my_old_pipe_split=\$pipe_split my_old_wait_key=\$wait_key nopipe_decode 
pipe_split wait_key<enter>\
<pipe-message>mail-open-attachments<enter>\
