I appear to have hit some key while using compose in mutt, and the result is
that I end on a new line after a certain length of characters in a new line.
What controls this? It is not a vi issue because the editor does no wrap after
even a very long, as used to be the case until earlier today.

I do think it is a vi issue (or setting) as mutt itself does not care what
editor you use to compose your message. My guess is that you have somehow
enabled line wrap mode in your editor. Note that this could be a default setting
for your editor when it recognises your message as being a (mutt) email message,
for example based on its filename. What happens when you compose a message, save
it, but do not quit vi? Does the message have the linebreaks when you look at
that file using less or similar?
