I like to keep active threads and important messages as well. I delete all the rest since they are archived somewhere else anyway. Here's my hook:

 folder-hook inbox push '<delete-pattern>!~(~U|~F|~d<3m)<enter>'

This deletes any message that is not part of a thread which contains a message that is `~U`nread, `-F`lagged or `~d`ate < 3 months.
