It worked fine for me. If didn't for you it means you missed something.
Here is my setup:
In ~/.muttrc:
auto_view text/calendar
In ~/.mailcap:
text/calendar; ~/.mutt/vcalendar-filter; copiousoutput
Did you forget to make vcalendar-filter executable?
Test it independently from Mutt. Save the text/calendar part in
/tmp/foo.ics and run:
~/.mutt/vcalendar-filter < /tmp/foo.ics
What does that return?
