I have had some degree of success in finding an answer. I had some input from people to try things that didn't seem to work, when they should have.
What ultimately worked was I followed the instructions and installed from this link: http://macappstore.org/urlview/ following these instructions to install an already precompiled binary, leads me to believe that even though i was able to compile and install from the command line, there is still something wrong. I'll do some more research. Thanks to everyone who gave time and helped!! I guess for the OS X Yosemite users, beware! Thanks again, Russ
