It can be. Microsoft doesn't adhere to the appropriate RFC's regarding email encryption... they use the old in-line standard. So when encrypting to one of those clients, you have to use traditional inline encryption. Alternatively, you could convince them to use Thunderbird with Enigmail/PGP.
