The mutt installed today, from the mercurial repository, Mutt 1.5.21+145 (2a1c5d3dd72e) (2012-12-30) doesn't like this line in .muttrc:
set xterm_set_titles=yes It complains: Error in /home/erik/.muttrc, line 96: xterm_set_titles: unknown variable source: errors in /home/erik/.muttrc My old mutt, Mutt 1.5.20 (2009-06-14)¹, happily uses that to set the xterm title to "Mutt with 3097 messages [90 NEW]". OK, in the newer mutt, these manual sections have vanished: 3.310. xterm_icon 3.311. xterm_set_titles 3.312. xterm_title so the feature seems to have been deliberately removed. But there's no mention of it in ChangeLog, and the last traffic on the subject in my lurker's archive is from 2011, when it was still in use on-list. The archive: marc.theaimsgroup.com does not respond ATM, but a quick google of mutt.org, for xterm_set_titles, finds no talk of its removal. A search at http://bugs.mutt.org/trac/, for xterm_set_titles, matches only two fleas, and only incidentally. I wonder what happened to it? (But I'll survive without it. :) Erik ¹ Don't laugh, that's the very latest thing on ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS. -- Wizards had always known that the act of observation changed the thing that was observed, and sometimes forgot that it also changed the observer too.
