IMO, a better way to do this would be to have your current backup MX be your primary (and only?) and set it to have a high retry time, possibly even setting up something like ETRN[1] to trigger the remote MTA to flush its queue to you. You may also be able to configure your mail server to have a separate retry time for incoming vs outgoing mail. I *think* postfix can do this? Seems like something it would be able to do.
