I've used mutt for many years, without any "subscribe" in .muttrc. The
only difference I found in a quick manual scan just now, is:

» Additionally, when you send a message to a subscribed list, Mutt will
add a Mail-Followup-To header to tell other users' mail user agents not
to send copies of replies to your personal address. «

Since other MUAs don't always think exactly like mutt, I've found it
desirable to intercept "courtesy" copies in procmail.
