   Thanks for Cameron and Christian for their replies. Time limits me
   from working on this until later today, but here is a quick
   FYI/Post-Mortem.

   I originally tried with the 'installed' version of postfix.
   I got to the point where I could send mail but it was being
   sent directly to the machine, not to the mail server on my domain
   hoster.

   Then I tried the macports version and things went south from
   there. Then, I uninstalled it. Thus, perhaps the inference that I
   am still using the macports version. (corruption?)

   I will have my coffee, review your emails, follow your
   instructions later and reply then.
