Totally agree Jostein! Only get on internet when I can get to town, so haven't kept up since I posted the question and response. Since abook is now working how it's supposed to work, I've been learning a lot about the different import/export formats. I have no explanation of why I never saw the word abookrc in the abook manpage, but at least I got it working now. Mutt and abook are the best IMO. Thanks again. b
