Maybe you answered this already and I missed it, but is there any reason
why you're choosing the mh format over maildir?

Maildir is essentially a more modern successor to mh, and like mh is a
file-per-message format. Whilst the advantages of the maildir format over
mh probably aren't that important in your setup, my impression is that
maildir is more widely used and better supported than mh these days, so
you might run into less problems with it. (For what it's worth, mutt,
procmail, and various home-grown scripts all work flawlessly for me with
maildir. I've never used the mh format.)
