What is the value of $pgp_verify_sig? What you describe sounds like
it used to be ask-yes (or ask-no) and now it's just no.

I tried all combinations:
set crypt_verify_sig=ask-no
set crypt_verify_sig=ask-yes
set crypt_verify_sig=yes
Makes no difference, I always get
