I use sendmail.8.14.4,fetchmail-6.3.13 and mutt-1.5.20 as my mail system. Sendmail is set up as a client using my isp's provider as smarthost and I am using the default mbox format.
There was a post last month concerning a similar situation and I read it and the links included and read the docs about new mail but found nothing conclusive. I leave my mail on the system mailbox and periodically open the mailbox menu with mutt -y. The boxes with new mail show an "N" and after I open and read the mail I return to the menu with "y" and the "N" tag is gone for that box. When I open the next box and return to menu again the "N" tag is back on the previously opened box. If I open the box again then the "N" is gone for good. The only way I can keep up with which boxes truly have new mail is to start at the top and work my way to the bottom.
