There was a thread titled "empty trash" that contained a link the the trash patch in patch-tracker.debian.org but that site no longer works: http://patch-tracker.debian.org/patch/series/view/mutt/1.5.20-5/ The 'Deleting messages trash-can-style' thread doesn't have any links to the trash patch. The debian packagers must have the patch that they are using, so I may contact them for it.
