Yeah, I read a few old posts in the archives where you had explained the 
benefits of setting up Terminal.app in that way but I think the OP(s) problems 
at the time were mostly related to locales so I didn't think it to be 
applicable to my problem. But it does make sense to use your way, I'll have 
another look through the archives to find the steps you gave to set it up like 
that.  

I'm using Leopard and do you happen to know if the ncurses that comes with that 
will include nsterm-16color? I also had a look for an /etc/termcap file or 
equivilent but there isn't one. I gues that's why you use your own ~.termcap ?

As for my current problem, i'll just install X which i'm sure will sort it out 
simply enough. At least I now understand what's causing it which is the main 
thing so thank you again.
