Monitoring new mail in mbox mailboxes

Hello. I want to configure my Conky to display a count of a new
mail messages in mbox folders, like in sidebar-panel in mutt.

Does mutt writes some to mbox file when I read a new mail or
it has own cache? How I can monitor it?
