You are trying to do it the hard way :-/
If you check your mail log it will tell you if the mail went out or not.
Check your mail logs in /var/log directory
you should have some file in there:
-rw------- 1 root root 5643 2007-10-03 23:50 mail.err
-rw------- 1 root root 485675 2007-10-04 12:40 mail.log
-rw------- 1 root root 4160 2007-10-03 23:50 mail.warn
If there are not in there enable logging via your system logger eg.
/etc/syslog-ng/ if you use syslog-ng
