Thanks to those who suggest SASL. I will try this. I would rather not install yet more libraries if I don't have to. A unix-'locate' search reveals that I have some "stuff" in the folder /usr/lib/sasl2 and some files /usr/lib/libsasl2*.dylib. Does anyone know off the top of their heads if those will work?
Also, why is it that the new built-in smtp requires SASL (if in fact it does) while msmtp does not?
