No, when using a "normal" folder (where "normal" means non-IMAP), it depends on how I quit Mutt. Quit with 'quit' -> the new messages are marked as 'old'. Quit with 'exit' (or after setting the folder in read-only mode) -> the new messages remain 'new'.
