That's pretty much what I have, and it works for me. The only thing I can think of is that (auto-fill-mode) doesn't *turn on* auto fill mode, it *toggles* auto fill mode. Maybe you have code elsewhere in your .emacs file that's turning it on, so then this line is turning it back off. To always turn it on, try this instead: (auto-fill-mode 1) Good luck! Walt
