Are you reading over imap or pop?  If so, perhaps mutt caches
the mails locally for speed?

Or perhaps part of the mail was Transfer-encoded, and mutt
needed to save a temporary copy for decoding?

Of course, I'm guessing, and probably talking out of my
backside...
