...and no bce.  Recent versions of screen allow you to set bce in its configuration,
but you have to install a terminfo entry for screen which adds 'bce', so it
will work properly.

when screen doesn't handle bce, it fills in spaces explicitly rather than
using erase-line or erase-display, since background colors aren't assumed
to be propagated.  xterm sees those blanks when you do a select.
