courier wouldn't be able to read the file then; and courier uses
directories, not files.

the best way to deal with this IMHO is to put symlinks in ~/Mail/ or
~/mail/ to the directories in ~/Maildir/ (or vice-versa -- which is what
I do, since i rarely actually use IMAP).

you could also just put:
set mask="^\\."

in your .muttrc.
