I have this problem, too. I haven't yet decided it bothers me enough to
pursue it, but it's not just you.

]*[]}>|:%\+]+)"

(This is to try to catch that hideous quoting that Gnus and VM users
seem to use most. The coloration anomaly is strikingly apparent with
those.)
