Thanks for your reply! Well, I'm a little embarrassed now; it looks like maybe mutt has spontaneously started working again. I honestly don't know what happened; I did update my Debian packages yesterday and removed some that I never use, but none of them seemed to be in any way mutt- or even mail-related. I guess I'll be back with more questions if it stops working again.
