Use sSMTP (dunno about pop, though). sSMTP is monkeywork to configure (three line config file), and it sends mails just fine. Basically, it's a replacement for the sendmail binary: it takes an address as an argument, and then takes a mail from STDIN. Then it takes that and passes it off to the mailhub that you've configured in the config file.
