What is pgp_verify_command set to?  My guess is that you haven't turned
off all of GPG's output and it's what's messing up the screen.

For reference, my (Debian-supplied) value is

set pgp_verify_command="/usr/bin/gpg   --status-fd=2 --no-verbose --quiet --batch  
--output - --verify %s %f"
