no.  unless you have set MAIL
before starting mutt - then
it'll be accessible via $MAIL.

yep, MIDs are probably best for checking.

you could pipe the current message
to a script which adds the MID to
a file used by procmail to check
each incoming mail's IRT and REF.

(MID  -> Message-ID;   line
 IRT  -> In-Reply-To:  line
 REF  -> References:   line)

The check is probably similar
to checking for duplicates.
