I just came across the useful overview
http://www.suse.de/us/support/howto/mailhandling.  It discusses mutt
(as the client) and sendmail (as the MTA, which is configured by Yast,
the Suse configuration program), but mentions exim, smail, and postfix
as worthy alternatives.
