It's a multipart type that provides multiple alternative views of what
the sender alleges to the the same content, using two different presentation
types. For example, I can send you a message in text and HTML by
using a multipart/alternative part containing within its envelope a text/plain
part and a text/html part.
(But, as you see, I can hoodwink you by placing
different material in one part than in the other.)
