Hello, I'm using mutt 1.3.23i with libiconv 1.7.0.1 on RedHat 6.2. I couldn't find any references to libiconv mailing list, private mail to the maintainer bounced; I was unable to find any relevant info from mutt-users arhives, too. That's why I'm writing here.
I'm happy to see that mutt 1.3 has substantially better encoding handling (especially proper conversion). I "./configure --enable-pop --enable-imap --with-ssl --enable-locales-fix --without-wc-funcs" and have no problems displaying mail in various encodings. However, very often I have to read mail (encoded in koi8-r, windows-1251, or iso-8859-9) from 7-bit dumb terminals. In such cases I have to use transliteration. But I don't like new default transliteration scheme. With ":set charset=us-ascii//translit", Cyrillic letters are either printed incorrectly (e.g., they look as 8-bit garbage) or are not printed at all. Turkish "extra" letters (with codes > 127) are printed as "o, ^u, etc., whereas they are traditionally used without prepending diaeresis or circumflex (i.e., like plain o, u, etc.). I made some changes to libiconv-1.7.0.1/lib/translit.def (a patch is attached) and issued "make -f Makefile.devel lib/translit.h; make clean; make install" (I didn't know whether cleaning was necessary, just to be sure). This worked for iso-8859-9, but not for Cyrillic encodings: they still show up as garbage, or are not showed at all. Could anyone please point how I can solve the problem? If the issue is libiconv-related, what is the current address of the maintainer or the mailing list? Thanks in advance, Baurjan.
