It would, but the point of using imap is to use it for storage and remote access - Ideally there would be a client tool that connected to an imap INBOX, fetched specified headers from all the unread mail, then issued lots of move/delete commands based on some regexes in a config file - A piece of vapourware that has been discussed here before.
