% This is something that seems incredibly easy, but I couldnt find any help
% in the mutt manual and docu.
You simply weren't looking in the right place :-)
%
% how do you change the dimensions of the fields in index-view?
I could just tell you to read up on index_format and leave it at that,
but that wouldn't be nice...
%
% the mail suject for example, gets cut of after a certain number of characters.
% I can, of course, make the xterm bigger, but the "fields" dont get bigger, I know
% there is a setting for it somewhere, but where?
I have these in my [antiquated] muttrc file (please excuse the line
wrapping):
folder-hook . 'set index_format="%4C %Z %{%b %d} %-15.15L %?M?>#%03M<&(%4l)?
%s"' # used to be hdr_format
folder-hook (taxinfo|linux|suse|stories) 'set index_format="%4C %Z %{%b %d}
%-3.3L %?M?>#%03M<&(%3l)? %s"' # ugh; long subject lines
folder-hook freenet 'set index_format="%?y?[%-13.13y]&%4C %Z %{%b %d}? %-3.3L
%?M?>#%03M<&(%3l)? %s"' # let's see the tips
The first shows me the typical mutt index display. The second gives
more space to the subject field, at the expense of the author field,
but still fits in 80 cols (note the change from 15.15L to 3.3L).
The third blatantly steps on the message numbers to display the first
few characters of any existing X-Label: field (note the change from %4C
to %?y?[%-13.13y]&%4C).
This is fun stuff, and you can spend a *lot* of time playing with the
display. You have been warned :-)
