Attributing replied text quotes

How can I dynamically specify the first name or initial
of the original poster, when replying, as opposed to just
the static use of characters such as:

> this is the quote from the original
> message I am replying to

I'd prefer some sequence which would permit me to end up with:

DT> this is the way I'd prefer
DT> to quote from the original post
