Trying it from within vim from within mutt, initiating a mail message,
I get this:

        :!readmsg 66 <---[my command]
        readmsg: Folder "/net/u/5/r/rj/.mailspool/rj" is empty.

Press RETURN or enter command to continue

(My inbox is definitely not empty.)

Does it actually work for you? Exactly how are you invoking it?
At which point? From within mutt? From inside your editor?

Also, what mailbox format do you use? It probably works fine with mbox,
but may choke on others. I use maildir mailbox format, and I have a
feeling that may be affecting readmsg's functioning.
