I should have mentioned this:  It's definitely not possible.  I was
editing the message for hours (literally), and I save compulsively.

It's conceivable, of course, that, as I exited the editor (vim), I
mistakenly executed some keystrokes that caused the entire text to
be deleted before saving.  It's also possible that there is a bug in
vim, or in the kernel, etc.  But mutt is a suspect, even though I
have always found it very reliable.
