It sounds like you want the 'limit' function, bound to 'l' in the index
menu by default. I had a similar problem: my regular mail was getting
lost among all the newsletters I subscribe to, especially when I got
behind in my reading. Here's what I have in my muttrc to show either
just the newsletters (<Esc>n), or everything but the newsletters
(<Esc>N).
